Our Mission

Action for Local Food is an Islington based project aimed at developing a movement for residents to create practical solutions to help address climate change and benefit the community by growing food, managing soil, harvesting water, preventing food waste and sharing surplus food.

Our vision is for everyone in Islington to have access to local, fresh and sustainable food.

Action for Local Food is a partnership project between Octopus Communities, Global Generation and Islington Council. The project is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, as part of the ‘Climate Action Fund’ programme.

We are building a movement of growers who will nurture locally grown food from plant to plate, connecting people to the food they eat. Working together, we are also supporting the development of a thriving network of residents, businesses and community groups who will help transform our food system from the ground up. Our Action for Local Food Ambassadors are developing their knowledge to help share skills with others across the borough.

Growing food locally, reducing and recycling food waste, managing soil and water runoff, improving biodiversity and turning unused land into growing space is good for us and our communities, good for the planet, and helps mitigate climate change. As individuals, we can only take small steps, but coming together we can grow our impact locally and begin to make a difference we can see and understand.

Through mapping potential and existing growing spaces, passing on vital practical skills to groups and individuals and providing a platform for residents to meet each other and share what they know we hope that Islington residents will reap the benefits of a coordinated approach.
